Mar 16: Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar stated that the Election Commission’s unwavering commitment to addressing the challenges posed by the ‘4Ms’ – muscle power, money influence, misinformation, and Model Code violations – in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He sternly warned against any violence during the electoral process, asserting that the Commission will act ruthlessly if such incidents occur.Speaking at a press conference to announce the poll schedule, CEC Kumar stated that preparations are underway to establish 10.5 lakh polling stations nationwide, urging voters to participate actively in the electoral process. To combat the influence of muscle power, the Election Commission has issued stringent guidelines and regulations.

Measures include the deployment of an adequate number of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), the establishment of 24×7 integrated control rooms in districts, webcasting in sensitive booths, and the enforcement of pending Non-Bailable Warrants (NBWs) and the surrender of arms by individuals with criminal backgrounds. Additionally, a network of check posts and drone-based monitoring at borders will be implemented.

In order to ensure a level playing field, guidelines have been issued to District Magistrates (DMs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs). These include the impartial transfer of officials, randomization of polling staff, accountability at the district level, clear communication, and the participation of polling agents at every booth.

Transparent procedures for permissions and entitlements, non-discriminatory actions against party workers, and restrictions on volunteers and contractual staff during election duties have also been outlined.Furthermore, the Election Commission announced that the Lok Sabha elections of 2024 will be conducted in seven phases, commencing on April 19 and concluding with counting on June 4. Phase-wise polling will take place on April 19, April 26, May 7, May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1.
