Srinagar, Jun 05: Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Manoj Sinha Wednesday urged the citizens to take pledge of not utilizing single use plastic to preserve the fragile ecosystem.

Speaking during a conference on ‘Our Land, Our Future’ here in Srinagar, he said, “On this environment day, every citizen should take a pledge that it will stop using single use plastic to preserve the fragile ecosystem of Jammu and Kashmir.”

According to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Sinha on the occasion said, “I think we can give our efforts in treating the solid waste in villages, towns and cities to increase the possibility of restoring our ecosystem, reviving our water-bodies and ultimately helping in stopping the land degradation.”

The LG further said that Jammu and Kashmir was very fragile in nature. “I think our efforts must be continued for land restoration and environment conservation.”

“On this world environment day, I would like to see every citizen taking efforts in resolving the land degradation and related issues of the environment by restoring it. In order to achieve the success, I think participation of each citizen is required,” Sinha said, adding that “Without, trees and plants life is impossible and we need to take every step to preserve our environment.”

Referring to the climate change panel of the United States, the LG said that if we do not succeed in preserving the biodiversity issues in the coming ten years, the issues may be irreversible. “Since the concerned authorities across the world have taken measures on climate change due to global warming, the situation of environmental issues has been a bit good,” he said.

Sinha said that he was satisfied that Nigeen Lake Conservation Organization has successfully transformed the Gilsar-Khusalsar water bodies. “PM of our country has also appreciated Manzoor Ahmad—chairman of Nigeen Lake Conservation Organization (NLCO) for its success story and best practice concerning the conservation of Nigeen lake in Srinagar.”

Speaking about the outcome of the efforts of the administration, the LG said that the local citizens and tourists throng to the shores of clean Jhelum till late evening. “The Jhelum river front is being much talked about. The administration is conducting green drives, promoting sustainable life and other activities.”
