Srinagar, Jun 27: Amid the rising drug addiction cases, experts believe that family support is crucial in the journey to recovery. They said the role of the family can influence the success of rehabilitation efforts.

Speaking to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), Ishrat Jan, a counsellor at the Addiction Treatment Facility (ATF), said that those struggling with drug addiction who receive consistent and compassionate support from their families are more likely to achieve and maintain sobriety.

“Emotional and psychological stability provided by family members can be pivotal for recovery. Knowing they are not alone and that their loved ones believe in their ability to change can be incredibly motivating for addicts,” she said.

She acknowledged the challenges in overcoming drug addiction but stressed that steadfast family support enhances the chances of successful recovery. However, Ishrat also noted a concerning trend: “Despite efforts, many addicts relapse due to social stigma and family criticism.”

Jan said there is a need for both familial and societal support for those seeking treatment to overcome drug abuse.

The Addiction Treatment Facility at DH Kulgam, established in August 2021, has treated approximately 1,950 patients to date and provided counselling to over 7,000.

Dr Aadil, a Medical Officer at the Addiction Treatment Facility in District Hospital Shopian, said that a large majority of patients seeking treatment are opioid users, predominantly abusing heroin. “About 90-95 percent of our patients are opioid users, with heroin being the most commonly abused,” he informed.

Regarding gender disparity in seeking treatment, Dr Aadil said, “Out of 580 registered patients at ATF Shopian, only one woman initially sought treatment but stopped due to social stigma.”

He said a supportive family environment is important for patients along with proactive measures such as monitoring their activities and social circles. “Parents should regularly check their children’s belongings and behavior, and consult a doctor if they notice any changes,” he advised.

The medical officer also highlighted the importance of motivating individuals to leave drug addiction and providing them with free medicines.

Dr Aadil said the facility is providing free medicines and conducting counselling sessions with both patients and their families. “Counseling sessions are held with patients and their family members to sensitise them on how to deal with these patients at home,” he said, adding, that family involvement in a person’s recovery from addiction has many benefits for both the addicted patient and other members of the family.
