Baramulla, Jul 12 : Amid a surge in road accidents, a traffic crackdown across north Kashmir’s Baramulla district has intensified and led to huge fines and vehicle seizures.

Officials from the Motor Vehicle Department informed the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Baramulla, Muazzam Ali and his team have been conducting enforcement operations throughout the district.

Over the past ten days, authorities have seized 12 cabs and eight motorcycles on the spot, an official said, adding that 296 vehicles have been challaned, resulting in fines totalling Rs 365,000.

Further details reveal that over 50 drivers have received show-cause notices for the suspension of their driving licenses, with 20 licenses suspended so far. The enforcement efforts were concentrated in Sopore, Baramulla and Tangmarg towns, as well as on the National Highway near Tapper Pattan.

ARTO Muazzam Ali said the increased enforcement was directed by senior officers in the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) and that similar operations would continue in the coming days, covering all towns in the district, including Uri and Rafiabad.

Ali called for the importance of road safety, saying that several lives had been lost in road accidents in recent months. “We urge motorcyclists to wear helmets and ride carefully, and we call on all drivers to adhere to traffic rules to ensure safety on our roads,” he said.
