Srinagar, July 23, 2024 – The Director of Health Services Kashmir (DHSK) has issued a circular in response to an outbreak of gastroenteritis in several areas of the Kashmir division. The circular, emphasizing the critical need for public awareness, stated, “There has been an outbreak of gastroenteritis in certain areas of Kashmir division. In order to prevent further spread of the disease, it is imperative to make the public aware of SOPs to be followed.”

Among the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued are:

  • Avoiding direct sunlight
  • Special focus on children
  • Proper hand hygiene
  • Staying hydrated
  • Avoiding contaminated food and water
  • Using oral rehydration solutions (ORS) to prevent dehydration
  • Seeking medical attention at the first signs of illness

The DHSK’s directive highlights the heightened vulnerability of children to health complications due to the extreme heat, urging parents and guardians to take extra precautions. Symptoms of gastroenteritis include diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and fever, which can be particularly dangerous for young children and the elderly.

In light of these health concerns, there are growing calls for the Director of Education to re-announce the summer break. The sweltering heat has already caused numerous health issues among children, exacerbating the situation in areas already dealing with the gastroenteritis outbreak. Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion and heatstroke, further endangering students’ health.

India is currently grappling with multiple health crises, including the Nipah Virus and Chandipura Virus outbreaks. The addition of gastroenteritis in Kashmir adds to the strain on the healthcare system, making it crucial for swift and comprehensive action to protect public health. The healthcare infrastructure is being tested, with hospitals and clinics seeing an increase in patient numbers and demand for medical supplies.

Local health officials and educational authorities are expected to convene soon to discuss further measures to safeguard the health and well-being of the community. In the meantime, residents are urged to adhere strictly to the SOPs and stay informed about further updates from health authorities. The public is also encouraged to report any new cases of gastroenteritis to local health centers to ensure timely intervention and control the spread of the disease.

Parents are particularly advised to keep a close watch on their children’s health and ensure they follow the guidelines issued. Schools are being asked to maintain hygiene standards, ensure clean drinking water is available, and minimize outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
