Srinagar, July: The World Crafts Council International (WCC) on Wednesday officially designated Srinagar as a ‘World Craft City’ during a ceremony here.

The prestigious recognition was celebrated at a grand ceremony held at SKICC Srinagar, where Saad Al Qaddumi, President of the WCC delivered a speech and highlighted the importance of this achievement.

“I am honoured and proud to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the government officials and the citizens of Srinagar on acquiring the World Crafts Council’s designation as a World Craft City,” said Qaddumi, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

He said Srinagar has joined its well-deserved rank among the most celebrated 65 World Craft Cities across the world. He highlighted the rigorous process involved in achieving this designation, underscoring its significance.

Saad expressed gratitude to the hosts, the World Crafts Council team, master artisans and the people of Srinagar for their dedication and hospitality.

“This city represents a testament to the hard work and prestige of Srinagar’s artisans, who have preserved and cherished the city’s craft traditions over generations,” he said, adding Srinagar’s crafts are not only a source of beauty and pride but also play a crucial role in the social and economic development of the region.

The WCC President added, “The recognition by the World Crafts Council enhances cultural exchanges and fosters mutual understanding among different communities worldwide. The recognition of Srinagar as a World Craft City by the World Crafts Council is a step towards safeguarding the Indus heritage and promoting sustainable development across the sector.”

The designation of Srinagar as a World Craft City not only celebrates its cultural heritage but also paves the way for future growth and development in the craft sector, ensuring the legacy of its artisans continues to thrive.
