JAMMU, DECEMBER 14(TKA): In a major step towards improving connectivity for remote regions, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has approved a subsidized helicopter service on the Jammu-Poonch-Mendhar route, along with an additional option for the Jammu-Mendhar-Jammu route.

An official statement from the MHA confirmed the approval, stating that the proposal submitted by the Jammu and Kashmir government was examined and cleared in consultation with relevant departments. The Union Territory has been advised to claim subsidies within the allocated budget.

This initiative follows a proposal from the Secretary of the Civil Aviation Department, J&K, Mohammad Aijaz Asad, aimed at directly connecting the remote area of Mendhar with Jammu, the winter capital of the Union Territory.

Aijaz Asad highlighted the importance of this service in addressing the connectivity challenges faced by residents of Mendhar and surrounding areas. He noted that the subsidized helicopter service would greatly benefit commuters and facilitate emergency evacuations for patients when required.

According to Asad, improved air connectivity is expected to enhance travel convenience, strengthen infrastructure, and provide reliable transportation for residents. He also emphasized the utility of the service during the harsh winter months, particularly in Mendhar’s challenging terrains, where it can be crucial for medical emergencies.

Looking ahead, this initiative is expected to contribute to border tourism development in the Mendhar sector, further enhancing its economic potential.

Currently, subsidized helicopter services are operational on several routes in Jammu and Kashmir, including Kishtwar-Sounder-Navapachi-Ishan-Kishtwar, Jammu-Rajouri-Poonch-Jammu, Jammu-Doda-Kishtwar-Jammu, Bandipora-Kanzalwan-Dawar-Niri-Bandipora, and Kupwara-Machil-Tangdhar-Keran-Kupwara.

The addition of the Jammu-Mendhar route marks another significant step in bridging connectivity gaps in the remote areas of the Union Territory.
