Handwara , Dec 17 (TKA): The Jammu and Kashmir administration has constituted a high-powered committee to resolve the land relocation issue for the proposed Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara and its affiliated Nursing College. These institutions are being developed under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) to strengthen the healthcare infrastructure in the region.

The committee will be chaired by the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir, and includes senior officials from various departments. According to an official order, members include the Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Principal of GMC Handwara, Chief Engineers from the Public Works (R&B) and Irrigation and Flood Control Departments, as well as representatives from Agriculture, SKUAST-Kashmir, and other relevant stakeholders.

The primary responsibility of the committee is to evaluate the feasibility of potential sites identified by the Deputy Commissioner of Kupwara. This evaluation will consider critical factors such as:

  • Safety parameters
  • Soil condition
  • Flood risks
  • Availability of infrastructure, including water supply, road connectivity, and electricity

Additionally, the committee will ensure that the proposed land is encumbrance-free, meets the National Medical Commission’s (NMC) requirement of at least 200 kanals, and has provisions for future expansion of the institution.

To expedite the process, the panel has been directed to obtain all necessary clearances and submit a detailed report with specific recommendations to the government within 15 days.

This development marks a significant step in ensuring the timely establishment of GMC Handwara, which is expected to bolster healthcare services and educational opportunities in the Kupwara district and nearby regions.
