As the winter chill tightens its grip, the minimum temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh have plunged further, with several areas recording sub-zero temperatures. While the Kashmir region experienced freezing conditions, parts of Jammu and Ladakh reported severe cold.

Kashmir Region

The cold wave has deepened in Kashmir, with many places recording temperatures below freezing. Shopian emerged as the coldest place in the region, with the mercury dropping to a frigid -6.8°C, followed by Larnoo at -6.7°C, and Sonamarg at -6.5°C. Popular tourist destinations like Pahalgam and Gulmarg also faced intense cold, recording -6.2°C and -5.6°C, respectively.

In Srinagar, the minimum temperature settled at -3.0°C, while nearby Pulwama, Qazigund, and Khudwani recorded -3.6°C, -4.0°C, and -4.6°C, respectively. Bandipora, Baramulla, and Budgam saw relatively less severe cold at -3.3°C, -2.3°C, and -2.6°C, respectively.

However, temperatures in Zojila, Ganderbal, and Anantnag remain unavailable.

Jammu Region

Jammu city recorded a relatively warmer night at 10.5°C, while Kathua followed closely at 10.4°C. Other towns like Samba (9.1°C), Udhampur (9.4°C), and Reasi (9.4°C) experienced mild cold.

Hill stations like Banihal (4.6°C), Batote (4.2°C), and Bhaderwah (2.5°C) saw moderate chills. Padder recorded a sharp dip to -5.6°C, indicating a significant drop.

In Rajouri and Kishtwar, the minimum temperatures stood at 2.1°C and 3.1°C, respectively.

Ladakh Region

Ladakh continues to endure the harshest winter conditions. Drass, known as the second coldest inhabited place on Earth, recorded a bone-chilling -18.2°C. Leh and Kargil followed suit with temperatures of -10.2°C and -10.0°C, respectively.

Winter Intensifies

With temperatures dropping steadily, residents and tourists are advised to take precautions to combat the cold. The freezing temperatures are expected to persist, intensifying winter hardships and adding to the charm of the snow-covered valleys for visitors.__(KW)
