Baramulla, Oct 14: Residents of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district said that after years of “underrepresentation” and “unfulfilled promises”, they are optimistic about the tenure of their newly elected MLA, Javaid Hassan Baig. They hope he will address the region’s long-standing issues, including the revival of cross-border trade with Kashmir under Pakistan’s control.

Baig’s election has sparked renewed hope among the people, with many believing that sustainable development and inclusive governance could restore Baramulla’s historical identity as the “Gateway of Kashmir”, which has diminished over time.

Locals of Baramulla, speaking with the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), expressed their expectations for Baig to focus on critical areas such as healthcare, education, public services and trade relations with PoK.

A primary concern is the restoration of the Line of Control (LoC) trade, which has been stalled for years. Many residents voiced their disappointment over the previous government’s neglect, highlighting declines in business activity, infrastructure, and essential services.

Rameez Ahmed, an educationist, called for improvements in the GMC and healthcare sector. “Public services, e-governance, and other developmental initiatives are also critical. We hope the Greater Baramulla initiative materialises under his leadership,” he said.

Mudasir Naqshbandi, a lawyer and activist, stressed the urgency of revitalising cross-border trade, noting that it has been neglected for too long. “We want the MLA to restore it and improve trade relations to foster economic growth,” he said. “Baramulla deserves better, and we hope Baig fulfills his promises.”

Bhawani Shankar, a businessman and member of the Kashmiri Pandit community, said Baramulla has immense potential for growth if cross-border trade resumes. “We hope for peace, brotherhood, and an environment where migrants feel encouraged to return,” he added.

Another local, Harban Singh, underscored the necessity for improved public facilities and healthcare. “The new MLA must focus on upgrading these essential services,” he urged.

Javaid Hassan Baig of the National Conference retained his seat in the Baramulla Assembly constituency, securing 22,523 votes and defeating AIP-backed candidate Shoaib Nabi Lone by a margin of 11,773 votes.
