Bandipora, March 06 (TKA) : Brarpora Bandipora social activist Zakir Hussain has raised serious concerns over the deteriorating condition of a local canal, criticizing the administration for its inaction. Speaking to the media, he stated that heaps of garbage have accumulated in the canal, creating foul odors in the summer and increasing the risk of waterborne diseases.
Zakir Hussain revealed that he had previously highlighted the issue by sharing a video that went viral, prompting the concerned department to respond. As a result, the BDO Bonakoot dispatched a team for cleaning. However, upon assessing the situation, the team found itself unable to clear the accumulated waste. While a garbage collection vehicle has been deployed daily since then, no steps have been taken to remove the waste that has already piled up.
Despite efforts by local volunteers to clean the canal, Hussain stressed that the ultimate responsibility lies with the administration. He argued that if officials cannot manage the situation, they should step down. He further warned that the pollution is endangering aquatic life and vegetation, as the contaminated water eventually flows into Wular Lake, threatening the entire ecosystem.
He urged the Bandipora district administration to take immediate and effective measures to clean the canal, ensuring a safer and healthier environment for residents while protecting the region’s natural water resources.
