Anantnag, Jul 18 : Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag achieved a significant milestone with successful completion of a hemiglossectomy with neck dissection and sub mental flap reconstruction.

The procedure, according to Kashmir News Observer, was performed on a 30-year-old man from Kishtwar.

According to the statement, the man a frequent tobacco chewer presented with a tongue lesion. “Imaging and biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma with nodal metastasis. A CT scan delineated the full extent of the disease,” it said..

Following comprehensive clearance from the anesthesia department, the patient underwent a hemiglossectomy with neck dissection and reconstruction using a submental flap, it said.

“This type of advanced cancer surgery with tongue reconstruction using a submental flap is the first of its kind in the new medical colleges. Previously, such high-end surgeries were only performed at GMC Srinagar and SKIMS Soura,” it added.

The surgical procedure was a collaborative effort led by Dr Aamir Yousuf and Professor Dr Sajad Majid Qazi from the ENT department, with support from Dr. Zaffar Malik, Dr. Shaista, Dr. Khalida, and Reyaz Ahmad from the anesthesia team.

Given the complexity of the surgery, involving the vital airway tract, anesthesia expertise was provided by Dr. Rukhsana Najeeb, who is also a Professor of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care and the Principal of GMC Anantnag, it said.

“Postoperatively, the patient is recovering well and is currently on RT feed,” it said.

The authorities hailed anaesthesia team and paramedics for their unwavering dedication and assistance throughout the procedure. “Their expertise and commitment were crucial to the success of the surgery and the patient’s recovery,” it said.
