Sopore, Aug: The ongoing dry weather and heatwave prompted residents of Sopore town in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district to hold special prayers on Wednesday, seeking relief from the extreme conditions.

As per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), residents organised a traditional Aalam procession, which began at Khanqah-e-Moula, passed through Main Chowk and culminated at the busiest Iqbal market where Salatul-e-Istisqa – special prayers for rain – were held.

Those present at the prayer said the heatwave has caused distress to both businesses as well as the agriculture sector. “Crops are drying up and the intense heat is affecting our daily lives. Our businesses have reported a downturn due to the prevailing conditions,” they said.

Those associated with the agriculture sector said they have been facing severe challenges, as their fields and orchards suffer from water scarcity, which has led to reduced crop sizes and yields. “Such conditions not only affect the current season’s yield but can also reduce the fruit-bearing capacity of trees in future seasons,” said a fruit grower.

A similar situation is being witnessed across the sub-division including Nowpora, Seer, Arampora and others, with farmers and fruit growers reporting losses due to the prevailing situation.

Several water sources that feed the fields in and around Sopore witnessed a decline, which has exacerbated the situation across the region.
